What a Bournemouth driveway sits on matters more than what it is made of, and the answer is mostly sand once the turf comes off.

What comes out of the dig
Strip the turf and topsoil off a Bournemouth frontage and what is underneath is usually a light sand and gravel, with stones and pockets of clay mixed through it. It is easy ground to dig, with nothing to break out, but easy is not the same as good. Sand has almost no binding of its own, so the sides of an open excavation slump inwards instead of standing up, and the ground will not serve as a base on its own. The strength of a driveway here is entirely in the stone that replaces what came out: laid and whacked in layers rather than tipped in and levelled, and taken deeper for a van than for a car. A membrane between the two stops the sand and the stone working into each other, which is what turns a firm base soft in the wheel tracks. Down on the low ground beside the Stour at Throop, Muscliff, Iford and Holdenhurst the story changes. That ground is soft and holds water rather than shedding it, so the dig goes further to find something worth building on, and where a frontage has been made up to level it, the fill comes out rather than getting paved over.

The shape of a Bournemouth frontage
Front gardens vary more than the ground does. The 1930s semis through Moordown and Ensbury Park tend to have a narrow run down one side to a garage, so the width at the tightest point and the turning angle off the road decide whether a drive works, not the total area. The Victorian terraces around Boscombe and Springbourne have shallow front gardens and often no vehicle access at all, and the honest answer on some of those is that a car will overhang the pavement. Where a frontage sits below the road, the level difference is taken up across the depth of the plot rather than in one ramp at the kerb, since a sharp transition grounds a long car. A crossing over the footway needs BCP Council's approval as highway authority, and what may be surfaced in a front garden is a question for the same call. Estimates are free and carry no obligation.
