Which way the garden falls
On the slopes at Canford Cliffs and Lilliput the ground drops away towards the water, and a plot like that is only usable once it has been cut into shelves. Terracing means moving soil from the top of the plot to the bottom, holding the cut with a wall or a planted bank, and getting the run of steps between levels to an even rise so nobody is watching their feet on the way down. Retained ground has to be drained behind, or the wall ends up holding water back as well as soil. Two low walls with a planted step between them are a smaller structure than one tall one and usually sit better in a garden that size. At the harbour end the problem reverses. Sandbanks is flat, a low sand spit barely above the water, so nothing falls anywhere and the falls have to be made. Creekmoor and Canford Heath sit in between, with plots that tend to be wide and regular, where the work is clearance and levelling rather than reshaping.

Pines, roots and dry shade
Branksome Park and the roads around it are heavily pine-wooded, and the trees decide a good deal of what is possible. Preservation orders and conservation area cover are both common in that part of town, so a check with BCP Council comes before any work near a mature tree, not after it. Roots run wide and shallow under a pine, usually further out than the canopy suggests, which means hand digging inside the root zone, keeping the soil level over it as it is, and not sealing a solid surface across it. The planting list changes as well. Dry, root-filled shade rules out a lot of the obvious shrubs, and the things that settle there are the ones already growing under the pines a few doors along.
